The Cairn Centre

"Ireland Through The Ages" Tour – with singer / songwriter Patsy Cavanagh.

On your arrival at The Cairn Visitors Centre relax with tea, coffee and freshly baked scones

Then come on A Journey through the Ages and meet The First Farmers, The Celts, The Vikings and all the different races of people who have shaped our land.

See how the countryside has changed over the centuries.

This indoor tour is conducted in a friendly and humorous style and allows plenty of opportunity for questions and comments

Afterwards, time permitting, you are treated to a live session of Song and Story with your host

During this time you are welcome to share a song or to lead the floor.

Amenities include Tea and Gift shop, Toilets, Ample coach parking and turning space and all facilities for disabled.

The Castle Inn Restaurant

This popular restaurant is beautifully situated on the banks of Lough Foyle in the midst of the 13th century Northburg Castle, which is described as ‘one of the strongest and most important fortresses in Ireland’. Background information on our historic past will be provided on arrival.

Lunch options will normally include salmon, chicken escalope and roast beef, served with creamed potatoes and vegetables, followed by homemade apple pie or chocolate fudge cake.

Special dietary considerations and options are available.

Inishowen Maritime Museum and Planetarium

Overlooking the busy fishing harbour in Greencastle, you will receive a guided tour of everything maritime!

The museum tour introduces the visitor to the riches of local traditions, culture and proud maritime heritage. Exhibits include the Coast Guard, the Spanish Armanda, traditional boat building and our dry dock, displaying fully rigged boats.

The first floor is dedicated to the Foyle Pilots, Irish Lights, an emigration room, WWI & WWII Battles of the Atlantic, shipwrecks, a library and much more.

Visitors are also welcome at no extra costs to view a planetarium show in our 30-seated state-of the art Planetarium. This multi-media planetarium show tells how our solar system was created, gives a detailed tour of the planets, major moons, asteroids, and comets. We provide a choice of three shows containing data from recent space missions as well as a wealth of entertaining information about our cosmic neighborhood.

This is a unique school tour offer that includes a visit to two great visitor attractions and a hot lunch, all in Greencastle Village! Great value for money, two uniquely different visitor experiences and a full day’s programme from one booking contact.

Inishowen Maritime Museum and Planetarium

Inishowen Maritime Museum is located in the old Coastguard Station in Greencastle (Only 100 Yards from the Lough Foyle Ferry Landing). The museum houses an extensive collection of artifacts, photographs and memorabilia of all things maritime, fully rigged boats, Currachs, Coastguards North and South, traditional boatbuilding, Spanish Armada, WWI / WWII, emigration and much more…

Then, there is our Planetarium - a unique attraction (there are only 3 in the whole of Ireland) with computer operated state-of-the-art projection systems. We can display a realistic night sky, as well as entertaining, educational and exciting shows. Each group has a choice of 4 great shows, suitable for all ages!

Free refreshments for Teachers / Assistants.

A high quality Lunch will be provided for the school group at the wonderful Castle Inn, located on the bank of Lough Foyle in Greencastle. This popular restaurant is situated in the midst of Northburg Castle, which is described as one of the strongest and most important fortresses in Ireland.

The menu includes a choice of Pasta Bolognaise, Fish Fingers, Pizza, Chicken Nuggets or 4oz Homemade Burger. All of the above come with a choice of juice and side order: Chips or Garlic Bread. Only €4.95 per child

"Ireland Through the Ages" Tour

From the first farmers to the recent past, our heritage comes alive on this indoor tour!

Meet the Celts and the Vikings! Travel through the hardship of the Irish Famine and familiarise yourself with all the races of people who have helped shape our country.

By incorporating the use of life-size figures, miniature countryside dioramas and housing, The Cairn provides the visitor with a virtual walk through time. This is a wonderful experience for children and adults alike.

See how your environment and the countryside have changed over the centuries. After the tour enjoy a fun history quiz and sing-song!
